How a rook moves
A rook can move any number of squares horizontally or vertically. It cannot move diagonally.
Like most pieces, a rook cannot jump over another piece. If an enemy piece is on its path, the rook can capture it and stop there. Use the arrows to see vertical and horizontal rook movement.
How to use rooks
Rooks usually become stronger after the opening, when pawns move and files open. A rook on an open file can attack deep into the opponent's position.
Remember
- Rooks move straight, never diagonally.
- They are powerful on open files.
- Two rooks working together can control a rank or file.
